Welcome to the nanoworld!
With this first nanoblog entry, the founding members of the Catalan Society of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology want to welcome you to the SCN²and take the opportunity to make a small statement of intent.
The creation of the SCN² has only been possible thanks to the work and collaboration of a small group of graduates of the first promotions of the bachelor of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology in Spain. Those of us who have had the unique opportunity to start a professional career in this fascinating and innovative field, we have assumed our responsibility and duty with society and, far from conforming, we have decided to start this project. We are aware of the great task that must be done to disseminate the advances, potential and risks of nanoscience and nanotechnology to the society so that it becomes involved in the process of debate and decision about the direction and limits that we want the future science to acquire.
Nanotechnologists are frontier explorers, we walk among the conventional fields of science convinced that it is at these frontiers of knowledge that nature keeps some of its most interesting surprises and opportunities. In this sense, nanoscience and nanotechnology, which are sure to be fundamental pillars contributing to social and economic growth in the future, has educated us in the scientific multidisciplinarity and transversality showing the fundamental value of the collaboration between members of the various fields of scientific knowledge. Therefore, we understand the need to join forces and create a network of excellence with all the research, development and innovation agents across the system as well as with the public administrations and society. We believe this is the only way to fully cooperate efficiently and transparently and being able to meet the new global challenges of the future in areas such as health, climate change or information technologies. We are convinced that this scientific platform offers us the real possibility of putting into practice new ideas and have a real and notorious impact on society and the science and technology system.
Finally, we would like to highlight the country’s incredible opportunity to become a reference point, at the European level, in cross-cutting enabling technologies such as nanoscience and nanotechnology. The basis of an excellent university and research system combined with the extended and innovative business culture, can place us in a privileged position to be at the forefront of the most revolutionary developments in the sector. On the other hand, we must be aware that achieving and maintaining this leadership position is only possible if society and public administrations are firmly committed to the economic growth based on the acquisition and application of new scientific and technical knowledge. We will do our best to ensure so.
We have a long way to go, but great objectives are conquered by small actions. Join the SCN² and let’s build together the future we desire!
